Understanding Computer Jargon

Hardware

Computer hardware includes all the physical components that make up your computer. Such as a keyboard, monitor, mouse, memory, motherboard, graphics card, and so on. Computer hardware is physical so is everything that you can touch.

Software

Computer software is made up of one or more computer programs. Software includes the operating system such as Windows, Linux and Mac and programs such as Word, Excel, Photoshop. An App would also be another example of computer software.

Antivirus

Software designed to prevent computer viruses. Antivirus software must be updated regularly to prevent the most recent viruses.

Drivers

A driver is a software program that enables your computer to communicate with hardware. Often you will need to install the correct drivers for new printers and other hardware components.

Firewall

A Firewall is designed to prevent hackers and malicious software from accessing your computer. To do this a Firewall controls the communication of your computer with other devices or the internet.

Cloud Storage

Cloud storage involves sending data to a different location hosted over the internet. Normally this is managed by a hosting company. This means that your data can be accessed across multiple devices.

Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is using programs hosted over the internet. Internet connectivity is improving and cloud based programs are becoming very popular.

Network

A network allows computers to link with one another and share files. Most work places will use a computer network to speed up sharing and collaboration.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is a measure of how much data is transferred over a period of time. Bandwidth usage is increasing with the increased use of the internet for phone systems, cloud computing, video streaming and browser activity. If your network is slow it could be a bandwidth problem.

ISP (Internet Service Provider)

(Internet Service Provider) A company which provides a connection to the internet, or internet services.

Browser

A program used for viewing web pages on the Internet. Popular browsers include Internet Explorer (IE), Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari.

Malware

Malware is the name given to software programs on your computers that you may be unaware of that are collecting information from you. Malware may enable someone steal your bank details or vital information.

Memory

Also known as RAM (Random Access Memory). Where the computer holds whatever you are currently working on. The contents of memory are lost when the computer is switched off. If you have lots of programs running simultaneously your computer my using a high level of RAM.

Operating System

Every computer has an operating system. The most common is Microsoft Windows. Apple has its own operating system for use on Macs. Computer programs are designed to be used on the operating system.
